I can’t help but like all these
’sentimental’ genre anime.
As compared to ’shounen’ anime like Inuyasha,
Naruto, Bleach etc… all those have so many, seemingly never-ending episodes…
few hundred? I dunno… that it reminds me of the popular Astro Wah Lai Toi
series… "A Kindred Spirit" ("Chan Ching")… …"Today, 9.00pm… "Episode
569"… ( ‘_’ );
Over apocalyptic battles for the fate of the
universe between super-powered charged-up demi-godlike champions… versus an
indecisive, but overall nice guy - who despite his shortcomings somehow seems to
never fail to have all the females fawning over him for some reason…
I’d choose the latter template.
I might have used to watch these
series attracted by the comely anime girls, but I think I’m
past that now (gasp! can that really be true??? まさか。。。?!!) and now
tend to look for engaging storylines and plot twists… and with the storyline
more focused on romance (rather than on saving the world).
And… nsfw storylines involving a
lot of naked two-dimensional ladies gravitating towards one guy
(hooray!) — although that may have given me (and most other people of
my generation) a kick sometime before… but right now, it doesn’t seem to cut
it ever since the hallowed days of Hanaukyo Maids (of
which many of us may have fond memories of. *smile*)
And so, by extension, I should like to watch all
those Korean and Japanese dramas too… right? HHmm… somehow, surprisingly,
nope. Not that I am opposed to them or anything… but just that I -simply just
wouldn’t start watching-… in fact, I
also ‘reluctantly’ started watching these recent few (two) ’sentimental’ anime
after … when it was somewhere among my (untouched, minimal) downloads for
like……. forever?
Also, in live action dramas you will definitely
know long beforehand which girl the guy will get together with in the end …
and there’s no, next to zero.zerozerozerozero possibility that the show will
choose the "bad" ending where the guy doesn’t end up
with any of the girls in the end.
Hahahah.
(One such ending may be one where the girls
fighting over the affections of the guy in question somehow saw the inadequacies
of the guy… and decided to get together with each other in a
lesbian relationship instead. *big sweatdrop* Or better still, all the
comely anime girls get together (*rejoice!*))
A lot of things can’t be represented by real
actors/actresses … sometimes due to limitations on their acting ability (that
happens when you choose actors based on their looks, rather than acting ability,
but if you don’t choose them for their looks, sadly, you can’t have much of a
korean/japanese drama… catch-22) and also limitations based on what the actors
are willing to do ("I can’t do that kind of scene! It’ll sooooo spoil my
kakoii (coooool) image")
And in the reality setting… you can’t have the
jealous females pulling out a 10-ton mallet and pummeling the protagonist with
it (although that didn’t happen in those anime series that I recently watched
too. Not that I go for that, though)
I could go on and on about why I don’t currently
watch Korean/Japanese drama series as opposed to anime series… but I think
that would take another post. I would like to reiterate though, that I
am not opposed to watching any K/J series…. I think I would only
watch a K/J series (indeed, any show that I would never pick up and watch on my
own) if somebody else were to be watching one (housemate, for e.g.) and I
happened to walk in… that would mean that I’d start in the
middle of the series though — that’s happened so many times
before. And no, in case you’re wondering, not watching the
earlier episodes doesn’t bother me.
In my humble opinion, I would say that the best way
to watch an anime in the ’sentimental’ genre (ラブ-ラブ ?ahaha…) Like how I
did… when I dug it up from the virtual stack of downloads… didn’t care to
search for any info on it before downloading, and didn’t care to search for
opinions/reviews before watching… Just watched it without any
expectations. You might be pleasantly surprised.
Oh yeah, and now about Canvas2, my description of
it is very easy, since talking much about it may spoil it for potential viewers.
After the first few episodes, you’ll either continue to watch or not, and when
you come to the ending, you’ll either love or hate the whole series. That’s what
I like about these stories.
In other words, just watch it and see whether you like it. Instead of having me to talk about why I like it and on and on… (it’s not the best story that I’ve watched in this genre, but I liked it nonetheless.)
Next time, I might write more about other titles
which are worth watching. Until then 楽しみ に まっている よ ~!
