Handphone number formula circulating on the Internet…

Thursday, March 15th, 2007
Kind of
anti-climatic when you work it out, and find that it’s not some hash
function with some special purpose from the phone companies, but just
some algebra "expanded" from its simplest form to look techie (and
attract random bored people on the Internet like me to try to work it
out.)

This formula would work not just for Malaysian
handphone numbers… but indeed for *any* seven digit number, because using
basic algebra, the arithmetic steps would eventually work out to be: 10000X + Y
(X being the first 3 digits, Y the last 4 digits of any seven-digit number) thus
shifting the first 3 digits by 4 places, and then "appending" the last 4
digits…

In the same way, we can create our own algebraic
steps, put in our favourite constants - as long as they eventually work out to
be 10000X + Y — and trick random people on the Internet :)

Thanks Evonne for the fun and interesting message
and hmchong for the valuable insight :)
